Design Engineering Intern / Sports Equipment

Design Engineering is the backbone to Burton Snowboard’s prominence in the outdoor sports industry. We are continually challenged with creating innovative solutions to consumer challenges, and developing the next generation of Snowboarding gear. The Design Engineering Intern will assist the Design Engineering team with the creation of new products and updates to anniversary products, as well as providing hand-on assistance in the operation and maintenance of our Rapid Prototyping lab.


The Design Engineering Intern will work closely with the Design Engineers and Manufacturing Engineers in the Burton Hardgoods product group throughout the product development process in creation of new or redesigned products. They will be mentored by a Design Engineer during the ongoing product development process and will take on smaller projects scaled to the scope of their tenure and skillset.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties may be assigned as needed)

  • Ideate, Design, and Evaluate new products/updates as determined by the Hardgoods project list
  • Develop specifications such as 3D models, 2D drawings, Bills of Material and other documentation to facilitate idea capture, prototyping, evaluation, and eventually manufacture of product.
  • Manage project(s) through design process and track progress
  • Direct/coordinate building of prototype product, equipment and/or tooling
  • Engage in research regarding materials and constructions for all projects
  • Create and develop relevant lab/user tests and procedures to validate performance and functionality
  • Analyze and disseminate test data/reports to determine if design(s) meet project goals and expectations
  • Acknowledge that his/her work directly affects the quality level of the final product


  • Pursuing, or has completed, a 4-year degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • Must have working knowledge of CAD software and technical drawings
  • NX and/or Solidworks preferred
  • Must be proficient with basic computer skills such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.)
  • Needs to have an organized approach to work and ability to efficiently schedule time
  • Able to function as a team player while at the same time be self-motivated
  • Must have effective communication and organization skills
